Letter to the Free Clinic Community:

The Barry Community Free Clinic opened in January 2009 to provide medical and dental care to uninsured and low income people of Barry County. Our mission has been clear: to provide 100% free care, to maintain a fully volunteer clinc staff and to move people into stable "medical homes" whenever possible. We have enjoyed tremendous support from the medical community, goverment leaders and from donors and volunteers.

This year has seen dramatic changes to our national and state health care systems, and as a result there has been less demand for medical service at the Free Clinic. The Affordable Care Act along with Michigan Medicaid expansion has given our clients the opportunity to obtain subsidized medical insurance. Locally, a federal grant has allowed Cherry Street Health Services to open a Federally Qualified Health Center in Hastings (the Barry Community Health Center)  which can provide immediate care to patients with no insurance, as well as navigator services for assistance in applying for health insurance.

As our mission dictates that we act in the best interest of our patients, and be a good steward of the community's resources, the Free Clinic Board of Directors has elected to make the following changes:

1. Beginning September 1st, the Free Clinic will provide dental-only services. We will continue to help low income and uninsured adults obtain basic dental care from volunteer dentists as we have done in the past. We will not have medical clinic hours. Medical patients will be referred to the Barry Community Health Center located at 330 Woodlawn Avenue in Hastings for medical services and for help applying for health insurance.

2. Beginning September 1st, the Free Clinic will partner with the Barry Community Foundation and the United Way to reduce financial barriers by assisting with co-pays and deductibles for patients who qualify.  This partnership is consistent with the Free Clinic's core mission to eliminate barriers to care, and is an ongoing commitment into the future. More information will be available at the Barry community Health Center and the United Way after September 1st.

It is with deepest gratitude that we acknowledge what so many have done to help the Free Clinic over the past 5 years. We hope that as we move into the future you will continue to support, advise, and stand with us on behalf of the people of Barry County.

Sincerely,

-Members of the Board of Directors

About

Providing free non-emergency medical and dental care

The Barry Community Free Clinic serves uninsured adults (ages 18 and older) who have an income of less than twice the poverty guidelines as defined by the most recent federal data available from HHS (http://aspe.hhs.gov/poverty/11fedreg.shtml).Services include medical evaluations and treatment, dental evaluation and treatment, limited on-site labwork, referrals to participating local specialists and labs, pharmaceutical assistance plans, medical supplies (as available), and referrals to local social services.

During fiscal year of 2010 - 2011, our free clinic documented providing services to 372 women and 248 men. More than 170 new patients were seen by clinic staff over the twelve month period. On average, 50-60 people a month were served through the pharmaceutical assistance program (PAP). These are chronic care patients who see Barry Community Free Clinic as their medical home and count on us to help them manage their conditions to reduce complications and increase quality of life.

How can we provide free services?

We operate using volunteers with a very minimal payroll, which is covered by a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield. Pennock Hospital generously provides our space, so we don’t have to worry about rent, either. But we do have some of the same expenses as other businesses: telephone and internet, paper, files, computers, software, medical supplies and equipment, stamps and ink, to name a few.

To help assist in covering additional costs, our clinic holds fundraising events throughout the year. We also rely heavily on charitable donations. Annual fundraisers include our End of the Year Individual Campaign and our Breaking Barriers 5K Riverside Run.

Patient Comments

"I find it a true blessing to have the BCFC here in Hastings. The last few years my family and I have had some difficult times due to loss of work. Even with a lack of financial resources, I was still able to receive vital medical care locally."
